1. He was born in Baghdad, Iraq

Sasson Gabay was born in Baghdad in 1947 to a Jewish family. His family immigrated to Israel when he was a child, settling in the country during a time of great social and cultural change. His background has influenced many of his roles, particularly in stories dealing with themes of immigration, identity, and belonging.


2. His breakout role was in an award-winning film

While Gabay had already made a name for himself in Israeli cinema and television, his international breakthrough came with The Band’s Visit (2007). The film won global acclaim, including the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard prize and the European Film Award for Best Actor, which Gabay received for his outstanding performance as Tewfiq, the Egyptian police orchestra conductor. Although The Band’s Visit was initially Israel’s submission for the Academy Awards, it was disqualified due to exceeding the permitted amount of English dialogue.

3. He played the same role on Broadway

After starring as Tewfiq in The Band’s Visit film, Gabay reprised the role years later in the Broadway musical adaptation. He joined the production in 2018, replacing Tony Shalhoub, and brought his signature depth to the stage, earning praise for his performance.


4. He starred in the hit satirical TV series Polishuk

Beyond his work in film and theater, Gabay became a household name in Israel for his role in the satirical TV series Polishuk. The show humorously depicted the chaotic world of Israeli politics, with Gabay playing the lead role of an unlikely politician caught up in the absurdity of government bureaucracy. The series was a major success and remains one of the most beloved Israeli TV comedies.
